Now
we’re just 2,137 miles from home.
The Route
We took OR-99W from Dundee to Sherwood, Sherwood-Tualatin Road to
I-5 at Tualatin, went south I-5 to I-205, took I-205 north to I-84 and
followed I-84 east to Baker City. It was a 333
mile drive.
About the Day
We awoke to a cool morning.
It was 55° when we left the Bagley’s farm at 9:45. The day warmed to 70°. It was mostly sunny with no wind ... a
perfect travel day.
Goodbyes
This is always the hard part.
Anna, Lucy and William just had to share every last minute of Grandma’s
time as she tried to get dressed and get the trailer’s interior ready for
travel. We only left 45 minutes later than planned.
I-84 and the Columbia Gorge
The route was opened yesterday afternoon after being closed
for a few weeks because of the Eagle Creek fire. We had no idea what to expect.
The eastbound lane of I-84 had been closed from Exit 17 to Exit
64. We saw our first evidence of fire near
the highway at milepost 34. The fire is currently
46% contained and there are a few hot spots.
We saw small smoke trails rising from a few areas. The gorge drive was
still very beautiful.
One of the big closures. |
Smoke hangs around in parts of the gorge. |
Thankfully, nature's beauty won this fight. |
Fire pockets were evident from the highway. |
This is where the trouble began. |
Landslides are a big concern. |
A hot spot. |
Most attractions appear to be untouched. |
The highway was in excellent condition. |
We've climbed out of the gorge |
Blue Mountains
I-84 heads over the Blue Mountains after we pass Pendleton (Yes, it's the home of the Pendleton Woolen Mills).
It's quite a climb over the Blue Mountains. |
The highway goes over and through the mountain. |
I-84 descends into a valley as we approach Baker City. |

The Campground
We’ve stayed at Mtn. View RV
Park before. Surprisingly, it was 3
years ago to the day … 09/24/14. It’s
nice and has a fun atmosphere.
We understand the source of the name.
Looking west. Yes, that's snow. |
Looking northeast from the entrance. |

Tomorrow
We’ll get an oil change and then get back on the road again.
