Day 39 – Portland, OR (Day 6)

Today had more action than the past few days.

The Route
None.

About the Day
It was mostly sunny and pleasant in the mid-70s.  There was no change in the weather department.

Breakfast with Adele …
We were up and out the door for a 9 am breakfast at Jam on Hawthorne with our friend Adele.  Elizabeth rode her bike and we drove.

The breakfast and the conversation were delightful.  We got a chance to catch up on the past four years and laugh a lot.

The server (Jason) added to the morning’s fun by tossing out clever advice as he prodded us to place our orders instead of talk. His final act was to deliver the bill as a paper airplane … it flew very well and crash landed in front of Dick.

Wandering around …
We drove downtown to find a Columbia Sportswear discount store.  The route was curious and congested.  We found the flagship Columbia store, but no convenient parking.  We gave up and came home.

A Rose Garden visit …
After a fun time of wandering around (see wandering above), we decided to visit the International Rose Test Garden.  Parking was hard to find here also, but well worth the effort.  Here's a sampling of what we saw.
We're high above Portland
Even the rest rooms are attractive here.
The gardens are on terraces.

A sunny day with beautiful sights.

Shopping with Elizabeth …
Dick has been looking for a Columbia zippered sweat shirt for a while (see wandering above).  Elizabeth found herself near a Columbia discount store and offered to do Dick’s shopping via text and phone.  She found a dandy fleece jacket at nearly 60% off.

Dick’s thinking this is a really fun way to shop.  Elizabeth’s thinking something different.

Whoops …
Stuff happens and it happened to us today.  We missed seeing a cement barrier while making a turn and the Durango got damaged.  We’ll find out tomorrow how our travel plans will be affected.

Tomorrow
TBD.

  1. Beautiful garden!! We have relatives in Portland, and done years ago (in the spring), they showed us a beautiful azalea garden. It might not be worth seeing in this season, but it, too, was magnificent.
