Day 34 – Bend, OR to Portland, OR

This was a nice, but unusual day.  We’re in Portland; the trailer is in Dundee.

The Route
The 163 mile route to the Winslea’s in Portland started on US-20N.  We took it to OR-22 (a scenic route), which took us northwest to I-5 at Salem.  I-5N connected with I-205 and we came to a stop at a familiar residence on S.E. 79th Ave.

That’s only part of the story for the trailer, however.  Dick took it an additional 41 miles to Dundee for storage while we stay and play in the Portland area.

About the Day
We woke to a cool, sunny morning.  It was 51° with 100% humidity when we left Sisters.  Clouds moved in as we travelled along OR-22 and there was some misting later in the day.  The temperature got up to the mid-70s.

Getting Started
We were on the road by 9:50 am.
Heading out.

On the Way
Along US-20 …
Lots of trees here
Mt. Washington's recovery after the 2011 fire.
US-20 is scenic.
There are many fire scars.
Potato Hill Fire
Out except for a few smoldering stumps.

Along OR-22 …
We saw an impressive lava field along OR-22.
The trees almost form a tunnel.
Remnants from a busy week.

Detroit Lake …
Detroit, Detroit Lake, Detroit Dam and Santiam River provide a beautiful recreation area. Pictures were hard to come by.  We stopped for lunch in Detroit. The Korner Post was jammed with memorabilia and had customer notes all over the walls and booths.
It's unassuming, but fun inside.
The Detroit town square

The Campground
There isn’t one per se.  We’re staying in the Winslea’s home.  The trailer is staying on a site at Kenny & Barbara Bagley’s home.

Fire Update
We’ve heard the Eagle Creek Fire is less than 10% contained.  They're waiting for rain to put it out.  I-84 is still closed along the Columbia Gorge.

We saw a few, small “safety” crews watching conditions along US-20 and OR-22.  The Potato Hill Fire was under control and out except for a smoldering tree stump.

Smoke was pretty well gone in the areas we traveled.

Tomorrow
We’ll be in Portland for the next week.
