Day 9 – Port Lavaca, TX to Corpus Christi, TX

We changed plans today because of a growing chigger concern.

The Route
We left Port Lavaca on TX-35S.  We passed through Rockport and Aransas Pass on the way to US-181 at Gregory.  US-181 took us across Corpus Christi Bay where we connected with TX-286 (a.k.a. I-37) and then TX-358 going toward Padre Island. The campground is on Waldron Rd., the last exit on TX-358 before entering the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway. It was a 106 mile trip.

About the Day
We slept in a bit and didn’t leave the Port Lavaca campground until nearly 11 am.  There was a stiff breeze most of the day.  The temperature reached the low 90’s.

Leaving Texas Lakeside RV Resort
Site #2

We originally planned to travel to Brownsville or McAllen.  Early in the trip we decided to cut it short, stop in Corpus Christi, find a good campground, and spend the afternoon doing laundry (to get rid of any “ride-along” chiggers).

Along the Way

Compano Bay Causeway – approaching Rockport

USS Lexington Museum on the Bay

Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge
Main Turning Basin
from Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge

The temperature at 4 pm in Corpus Christi was 90°F with humidity of 65%. A 22 mph breeze offered some relief.

Laundry got done and showers were taken.  Hopefully, we’ve put an end to the current chigger episode.

The Campground
We’re staying at Colonia del Rey RV Park.  It’s highly rated and is OK.

Tomorrow
We hope to head westward sometime tomorrow.
