Day 14 – Alpine, TX (Day 3)

It was another non-towing day.

About the Evening
Afternoon showers seem to be common here.  Dark clouds moved in around 5 pm and brought along some thunder.  The shower was light, brief and refreshing ...  it was over by 7 pm.

About the Day
It was 69°F in Alpine at 8 am.  The humidity was 73%, there was no breeze.

It started out as a relaxing, low-key day. We visited Marfa, returned to Alpine and then … went to the Big Bend Regional Medical Center.

Marfa
The city was founded in the early 1880s as a water stop.  Today, Marfa is a tourist destination and a major center for Minimalist art.  It’s about a ½ hour drive from Alpine.

We visited on a Sunday and found Marfa to be interesting in an underwhelming way.  The words eclectic, rundown and struggling also come to mind.  It’s clear that the community is able to do interesting things with less.  There are many closed businesses, re-purposed items and lots of old stuff. We probably didn't see Marfa at its best.

Town Square
Marfa Lights are a big deal here.
Presidio County Courthouse
The Jail Was Locked Tight
Re-purposed Items
A service station
 becomes an education center.
A tire store (possibly)
becomes a public radio station.
Three Airstreams
surround Bad Hombres Cafe

Old Stuff

Hmm ... don't think they're coming back to life.
Looks good from here.

Some Humor
An honest "Closed" sign.

A New Future
This looks like a very good idea here.

Marfa Mystery Lights
The official Marfa Lights viewing site is nine miles east of Marfa on US-90.  They were first reported in 1883.

Medical Center
Side effects from the chigger encounter have been getting worse.  We decided on the way back from Marfa that an emergency room visit was in order.  It turns out the Big Bend Regional Medical Center is just a few hundred yards down he road from our campground and it's open 7/24.  Yippee!

Service at the medical center was outstanding.  Dick is now on Keflex, Naprosyn and Hydroxyzine HCL.  His feet, knees and thighs are coated with antibiotics and wrapped in gauze.

Adventure certainly comes in many forms.

End of Day
The rain returned again today.  This visit consisted of two intense squalls.  It rained hard for about 1/2 hour each.  The street "dips" ran full of rain (they don't have storm sewers here).

Tomorrow
We’ll head toward El Paso and Las Cruces.

  1. So sorry about the health issues. I hope that the docs made you feel more comfortable Dick. My mother used to say "into each life some rain must fall," followed by some smart remark. Looks like you got a pretty good dose both metaphorical and actual. So now, let that be it!! The tire story is really fun although of course not while it was actually happening!
