Day 8 – Sulphur, LA to Port Lavaca, TX

We enjoyed a sunny day and new sights as we drove from Louisiana, into Texas and down the Gulf Coast.

The Route
We headed west on I-10, crossed into Texas, passed through Beaumont, and by-passed Houston on the Sam Houston Parkway (TX-8, toll road) to connect with TX-35.  TX-35S took us down the east coast (or as close as we could get to the Gulf).  The campground is a few miles off TX-35 in Port Lavaca. It was a 266 mile trip.

About the Day
We left the Sulphur campground at 10 am.  There was a gentle breeze most of the day.  The temperature reached a high of 95°F.

The temperature at 6:30pm in Port Lavaca was 88°F with humidity of 63%. A 14 mph breeze off the Gulf helped it feel cooler.

Along the Way
A Texas Greeting

Beaumont offered a view of large, Texas refineries.

There was so much to see as we passed Houston.

Agriculture emerged as we moved south from the industrial complex in Beaumont and Houston.
Cotton fields were ready for picking.

TX-35 angled closer to the Gulf shore as it proceeded southward.  The Lavaca Bay Causeway was a critical time-saver.

Causeway traffic moved well at quitting time
(even with a closed lane).

Did You Know?
Dick has never had a chigger bite … until a few days ago.  He now has over 40 of the pesky, red, itchy things on his feet and legs.  How did it happen?  Good question.

Their presence and possibility never came to mind. I didn’t think to look for them in the grass, couldn’t see them, and they made no noise.  The bites were painless and the itching didn’t start until a day or two after the damage was done.

Anti-itch solutions help some.  Rumor has it that the problem will clear up in a week or so.  Goody, goody!

The Campground
We’re staying at Texas Lakeside RV Resort.  It’s highly rated and is worthy of it.

Tomorrow

We’re heading down the coast to Corpus Christi and Brownsville, and then westward..
