The
trip was short. It ended in a place we’ve never heard of and can't pronounce. It’s 11
miles south of Cortez and 28 miles northeast of Four Corners.
The Route
We drove 77 miles today on US-160.
About the Day
We left Bayfield at 10:15. The
day was sunny and pleasant. The
temperature reached 93° in the late
afternoon. A brisk, dry wind provided a
cooling effect.
On the Way
Durango …
Our visit to the Durango historic district had a fun start. We parked the rig in two parking spaces
and paid both meters. Our first task was to find a place for breakfast.
A passing meter maid suggested her favorite place … Carver Brewing Company on Main Ave.
The service and meal were excellent. |
We then walked along Main Ave. to get a feel for the area. Like many tourist centers, the street’s personality
was shaped by restaurants, cafes, breweries, bars, galleries, up-scale shops and
real-estate offices.
These old buildings have stories to tell. |
This Lotus fit right in. |
Lots of art on display. |
Cliffs overlook Durango |
US-160 scenes after leaving Durango …
Was this left over from Friday night's parties? |
Approaching Mesa Verde (Entrance road slopes up the center of the mountainside.) |
US-160 south of our campground …
These are definitely wide-open spaces. |
The forces of nature are on display. |
Did you know?
McElmo Creek Flume No. 6 is located a few miles east of Cortez, on
US-160. It was in use from the 1890s to the 1990s. It was abandoned in 1991. Without this water system, Cortez would not have been founded. Restoration of this flume is in progress.
Ute Mountain is called Ute Peak or Sleeping Ute Mountain.
The Campground
We’re staying at Sleeping
Ute Mountain RV Park. It’s part of Ute Mountain Casino on the Ute Indian
Reservation. It’s an excellent
campground!
We enjoyed a brief swim in the pool.
Tomorrow
We’ll explore the area.
