It
was sunny all day … which means we didn’t see the total eclipse in west Texas.
About Last Night
There were showers through the night. None were dramatic. They produced a cool morning to start the
day.
The Route
We drove 270 miles today, starting with a short section on
TX-118S. We connected with US-90 in
downtown Alpine, drove northwest through Marfa and Valentine to I-10 at Van
Horn. I-10W took us to El Paso and to Las Cruces.
About the Day
We slept in a bit, went through our “getting ready steps” more
slowly than usual, and finally pulled out of the campground at 10:45 am.
Fortunately, we gained an hour when we crossed into Mountain Time as we
approached El Paso.

Along US-90
We’ve traveled US-90 since leaving Uvalde. It’s proven to be “a road less travelled”,
but one of interesting sights. There
were no services along the 73 miles between Marfa and Van Horn.
We saw our first TARS today.
The Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS) is a low-level airborne ground
surveillance system that uses aerostats (moored balloons) as radar platforms. The aerostats can rise to 15,000 feet while
tethered by a single cable.
We spotted this odd site on US-90. |

Rain cuts paths through the desert. |
The terrain changes constantly. |
Along I-10
El Paso is quite a city. It’s
big, diverse, and attractive. The
bridges, overpasses and walls along I-10 are painted in warm, western colors.
A glorious travel day. |

The Campground
We’re staying at Sunny Acres
RV Park. It’s just off I-10. We
stayed here on September 12-13, 2013. It’s
very nice.
Tomorrow
We’ll head north on I-25 to Santa Fe.
Hey you two! Your trip looks fabulous so far! And you're getting closer to AZ!! I'll be flying back into town later this week so keep me posted if you think you'll make it anywhere close to Cave Creek! There's a covered RV spot waiting for you and a bedroom in my house to stretch your legs for a while!! :-)
