It
rained as we finished getting hooked up in Lake Village and as we passed through
Lake Charles. It was mostly sunny the
rest of the day.
The Route
We started out on US-65S, crossed into Louisiana, and then passed
through Lake Providence and Tallulah to US-84 at Ferriday. We took US-84 west to LA-28 just north of
Walters and LA-28 southwest to Alexandria where we connected with US-165 and
finally with I-10. I-10W took us through Lake Charles, Westlake and to LA-27 at
Sulphur. The campground is a few miles
south of I-10 on LA-27. It was an interesting 302 mile trip.
About the Day
A gentle shower arrived at around 9 am, just in time to catch Dick working outside. He finished connecting
the trailer and we were on the road 15 minutes later. He was dry in about an hour.
The day was calm and mostly sunny with temperatures reaching the
low 90s.
An intense downpour let loose as we were crossing the Calcasieu River Bridge in Lake
Charles. It didn’t last long. Curbs
ran full and lots of pools formed.
The temperature at 6:30 pm in Sulphur was 87°F with humidity of 72%.
Leaving Lake Village
Before the rain |
It was very quiet. |
Lake Chicot from US-65 |
Along the Way
Like yesterday, we saw lots of corn fields, cotton fields and pecan groves.
A cotton field on the Mississippi Delta. |
We also saw lots of history (abandoned worker shacks, homes, trailers, mobile homes and businesses) and economic inequality (mansions and shacks side-by-side). The village of Lake Providence offered many examples of each. We didn't take pictures of the homes with open doors, broken windows, sagging porches and fallen roofs ... some were occupied, others weren't.

Did You Know?
We camped across from Lake
Chicot last night. It’s the nation’s
largest oxbow lake and the largest natural lake in Arkansas.
An oxbow lake is a U shaped body of water.
Forest Hill is the nursery capital of Louisiana. The community of 813 people (2010 census) has
more than 60 plant nurseries.
The Calcasieu River Bridge
connects Lake Charles and Westlake, LA.
It clears the river by 135’ and is 6,605’ long. It offers an exhilarating climb and descent
for I-10 travelers.
Heading west over the bridge |
The sky begins to clear at the mid-point. |
Refineries came into view as we approached Westlake. |
The Campground
We’re staying at A+ Motel
& RV Park. It’s highly rated and
reasonably priced.
Tomorrow
We’re heading around Houston and down the Gulf Coast.
